Den akademiske Tegnér

Olle Ferm (Red.), Bo Lindberg (Red.), Gunhild Vidén (Red.)
This volume results from a conference held in Stockholm in April 2023 on the Latin writings of Esaias Tegnér (1782–1846), often regarded as Sweden’s foremost poet of the 19th century. During his years at the University of Lund he produced academic texts of several kinds: contributions to science and orations for ceremonial occasions, but more usually texts produced to establish his eligibility for promotion to various academic positions. Tegnér was a brilliant Latinist, a keen philosopher and an able theologian. Four papers (out of thirteen in total) deal with topics not based on Latin texts: the influence of Rome and Roman literature on Tegnér’s poetry, the humour within his poetry, his political sympathies and his ecclesiastical rhetoric in Swedish.
